STOP ILLEGAL DUMPING!
What you can do to help:
  • Always dispose of your own litter properly and encourage others to do the same. Keep a litterbag in your car.
  • Use trash receptacles in public places.
  • Use the right size garbage cans with tight fitting lids.
  • Bag all garbage and trash before setting it out for pickup.
  • Know and support litter ordinances.
  • Do not transport unsecured debris in the back of a vehicle. Always use a tarp of some other cover. Debris flying out of trucks is subject to the same penalties.
  • Spread the word to friends and neighbors that illegal dumping is a crime.
  • Recycle at work and encourage a litter-free business.
  • Organize volunteer cleanups of illegal dumpsites. People are less likely to litter in clean areas.
  • Write and call your local or parish officials and let them know illegal dumping is a concern in your community.

Enforcement is necessary to teach adult citizens that littering is illegal. Louisiana has excellent litter laws on the books. Regulatory signs are being installed which reflect the revised litter statue, which provides for up to $5,000.00 fine for repeat offenders plus community service. Law enforcement officials are currently using this law to issue citations to litter offenders.

There is also a toll-free number for citizens to report litterers. All you need is the license plate number.
